Skin barrier function and stratum corneum hydration

چکیده
Under normal circumstances, epidermis must be as impermeable as possible except for a small amount of water loss to hydrate the outer layers of the SC. Although all living cells require water to function, some “dead” cells also require water to be metabolically active. As it is the case of corneocytes, epidermis must retain sufficient water to (a) hydrate the outer layers of the SC to maintain its flexibility and deformability and (b) to provide enough water to allow enzyme reactions that facilitate SC maturation events, together with corneodesmolysis and ultimately desquamation (Rawlings, 2006).

Environmental Factors (rh, T) and the Stratum Corneum Barrier Function to Occupational Chemicals
Skin permeation for the occupational chemicals mainly depends on the Stratum Corneum (SC), which behaves as a barrier against the entrance of any substance applied on it. The hydration state of the SC plays a crucial role for its barrier function and the permeation process, especially for the water-soluble substances. In this work the relationship of the environmental Relative Humidity (RH) and...
متن کاملNiacinamide-containing facial moisturizer improves skin barrier and benefits subjects with rosacea.
A growing body of literature suggests that some moisturizers can improve stratum corneum barrier function, as well as ameliorate dry skin. The clinical signs and symptoms of rosacea, which include increased facial skin dryness and sensitivity, suggest a possible role for such moisturizers as an adjuvant in the management of this condition. This randomized, investigator-blind, controlled observa...
متن کاملSkin cleansing and emolliating for older people: A quasi-experimental pilot study.
AIMS The aims of this study were to (i) assess the effect of low-cost hygiene and emollient regimens on the skin barrier function (SBF) of people aged >65 year with xerosis (dry skin) on their lower legs; (ii) to assess the utility of portable measures of skin barrier function in terms of stratum corneum hydration (SCH) and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) in community settings; and iii) to pro...
متن کاملSun-induced changes in stratum corneum function are gender and dose dependent in a Chinese population.
Previous studies have demonstrated that UVB radiation changes the epidermal permeability barrier and stratum corneum (SC) hydration. It is well known that sun exposure causes erythema, sunburn and melanoma. However, whether daily sun exposure alters SC integrity and epidermal permeability barrier function is largely unknown, especially in Chinese subjects. In the present study, we assess the SC...
متن کاملGlycerol accelerates recovery of barrier function in vivo.
Two studies were performed to evaluate the influence of glycerol on the recovery of damaged stratum corneum barrier function. Measurements of transepidermal water loss and capacitance were conducted in a 3-day follow-up after tape stripping (study 1) and a 7-day follow-up after a barrier damage due to a repeated washing with sodium lauryl sulphate. In study 1 a faster barrier repair (transepide...
متن کاملEffect of Skin-To-Skin Contact on Preterm Infant Skin Barrier Function and Hospital-Acquired Infection
BACKGROUND The preterm infants' skin is structurally and functionally immature at birth because of immature stratum corneum barrier function, leading to problems with fluid loses, thermoregulation, and infection. Two parameters of barrier function can be non-invasively assessed: Stratum Corneum Hydration (SCH) and Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL). Skin-to-Skin Care (SSC) is the proposed indepen...
